The Step Back Drill with Rick Eisenberg

Coach Rick Eisenberg demonstrating the Step Back Drill

What is it?

This batting tee drill focuses on learning how to use your legs to generate power and bat speed. For many youth baseball players, learning how to use their legs and the lower half of their body to create a powerful swing can be difficult.

In this exclusive video, Coach Rick Eisenberg from GameDay Baseball shows us step by step how to use the batting tee drill called the step back drill. This is one of his favorite drills for power used to teach young baseball players how to properly use their legs and the bottom half of their body to generate a powerful swing. This excellent drill can be used from the youngest of players all the way up to Major League Baseball players.

Why is it important?

When learning how to swing a baseball bat it's much easier to be all "upper body" and just swing the bat with all arms. This effective drill helps hitters create muscle memory and learn what it feels like to begin the swing properly, with correct lower half swing mechanics. This is a critical step for any hitter who wants more power, bat speed, and solid contact in their baseball swing.

Step-By-Step Instruction

A Quick Note: For the purposes of these instructions, we will be focusing on a right-hitter, but if you are a lefty, simply use the opposite position than the one mentioned.

Step One - The Ready Position

To set up for the Step Back Drill, start in a narrow hitting stance, with your feet about shoulder width apart.

Step Two - Sink Back

In the next part of this batting tee drill, step back and sink into your back hip/pelvis.  Focus on feeling the tension in your glutes and weight shift of your body weight when you sink back.

Step Three - Swing Execution

The last part of this key drill is to step forward, push off that back leg, and swing.  When you push off that back leg focus on feeling your weight transfer, this is where your power comes from.
